

The Patna High Court is the High Court of the state of Bihar, India. Established on 3 February 1916 by the British colonial government, it was created under the Government of India Act 1915. The court is headquartered in Patna, the administrative capital of Bihar. The foundation stone of the High Court building was laid on 1 December 1913 by Viceroy Sir Charles Hardinge, and the building was inaugurated on 3 February 1916. The court commenced its judicial functions on 1 March 1916, with Sir Edward Maynard Des Champs Chamier serving as its first Chief Justice. Initially, the Patna High Court had jurisdiction over the territories of Bihar and Orissa until 26 July 1948, when a separate High Court was established for Orissa. The court's jurisdiction was further adjusted following the creation of the state of Jharkhand in November 2000. The Patna High Court exercises jurisdiction over the state of Bihar and has the authority to issue writs under Article 226 of the Constitution of India. The court has played a significant role in the development of the Indian judiciary and has been instrumental in upholding the rule of law in the region.
