

The Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (IGIMS) is a premier public medical institution located in Patna, Bihar, India. Established on November 19, 1983, under the State Legislature Act, IGIMS was modeled after the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, with the objective of providing super-specialty medical care and reducing the patient load on other national institutes. The institute offers a wide range of academic programs, including MBBS, MD, MS, DM, M.Ch, DNB, Ph.D., and various paramedical courses. Admissions are primarily based on national-level entrance examinations such as NEET-UG for MBBS, NEET-PG for postgraduate courses, and NEET-SS for super-specialty programs. The IGIMS campus spans 131 acres on Bailey Road and currently houses approximately 1,070 beds, including a 100-bed Regional Cancer Institute. Expansion plans are underway to increase capacity to 2,500 beds, with ongoing construction of a 500-bed ultra-modern hospital and a 200-bed Regional Institute of Ophthalmology. IGIMS is recognized by the National Medical Commission (NMC), University Grants Commission (UGC), and the Association of Indian Universities (AIU), and is affiliated with the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of Bihar.
